What Is Mentalyc?

Mentalyc pitches itself as “AI for Therapists” with the promise “Be fully present. Leave with everything done.” It generates progress, intake, and supervision notes from four capture modes: recording live sessions (in person or telehealth), uploading audio files, dictation, or typing a summary. On top of that it layers treatment planning, progress tracking, and a therapeutic-alliance score.

It handles individual, group, couples, family, and child sessions, plus supervisee work. Mentalyc also maintains a large public resource library of help articles, FAQs, worksheets, note examples, and a blog. The library is not the product. This review covers the product.

What Does Mentalyc Do Well?

Four areas stand out in Mentalyc’s own documentation.

The document range is broad. Beyond the standard progress formats (SOAP, DAP, BIRP, GIRP, SIRP, PIRP, PIE), Mentalyc generates intake notes, supervision notes, narrative and clinical notes, MSE write-ups, biopsychosocial assessments, and verbatim transcripts, with discharge notes listed as coming soon. Its pages also reference EMDR, ABA, trauma-focused, psychiatry, and play-therapy work.

Capture flexibility. Record in the room or over telehealth, upload an audio file, dictate a recap, or type a summary from memory. If a client declines recording, dictation or a typed summary still produces a structured note.

The product also layers tools on top of the note. Treatment plans are auto-drafted with SMART goals and linked across sessions, symptom and goal progress is tracked automatically without questionnaires, and the Alliance Genie™ feature scores therapeutic alliance. Whether you want an algorithm scoring your alliance is a personal call.

Privacy posture on paper. Session audio is “processed and immediately deleted,” data is “never used to train AI models,” a BAA is available, and the claimed compliance list covers HIPAA, PHIPA, SOC 2 Type 2, and APP in Australia, with PIPEDA, PIPA, and PHIA also named. The trial runs 14 days with full Pro access, 15 notes, and no credit card, and there is a discount program for pre-licensed therapists.

How Much Does Mentalyc Cost?

Mentalyc runs on note-capped subscriptions from $19.99 to $119.99 USD per month (40 to 330 notes), with a cheaper annual rate on every tier. There is no permanent free plan. For US therapists the USD price is the whole story. Canadian therapists should note there is no CAD pricing anywhere on the site, so they pay in US dollars plus whatever their card charges for conversion. Two things to weigh before you commit. First, the cap model: you are budgeting notes per month, so a busy month or a documentation backlog eats the allowance. We could not verify from the pricing page what counts as a note against the cap (for example, whether regenerating a note or producing a second format for the same session draws it down), nor the fair-usage terms and any seat minimum behind the Team plan’s “Unlimited Notes*” asterisk. Ask Mentalyc both questions before signing up a team. Second, the currency: for a Canadian solo practice, a USD subscription is a moving cost that rises with the exchange rate. Is Mentalyc HIPAA, PHIPA, and PIPEDA Compliant?

Mentalyc says yes on every count: its homepage claims it is “Fully HIPAA, PHIPA, and SOC 2 compliant” and states it meets Canada’s PIPEDA, PHIPA, PIPA, and PHIA. For US clinicians, HIPAA and SOC 2 Type 2 are claimed and a BAA is available. Sign the BAA before sending any client audio, and check whether anything beyond HIPAA applies to you, since requirements vary by state and licensing board.

The same homepage also states, in its own words, “US-based data residency.” For a US practice, that is where you would expect client records to live. For a Canadian clinician, compliance claims and storage location are different questions, and the second one does real work.

The Canadian angle: US data residency under PHIPA, PIPEDA, and Loi 25

Storing client records on US infrastructure is not automatically prohibited, but it changes your obligations rather than someone else’s:

• Ontario (PHIPA): health information custodians must take reasonable steps to safeguard personal health information (PHIPA, s. 12(1)). Where records physically live belongs in that analysis, and in what you tell clients. Check your college’s record-keeping standard, since CRPO and OPQ expectations differ.

• Federal private sector (PIPEDA): you stay accountable for data you hand to a processor, and the OPC’s cross-border processing guidelines expect transparency with clients that their information may be stored in, and be accessible from, a foreign jurisdiction.

• Quebec (Loi 25): before communicating personal information outside Quebec, you must run a privacy impact assessment and confirm the information gets adequate protection (Private Sector Act, CQLR c P-39.1, s. 17).

None of that makes Mentalyc unusable in Canada. It means your consent forms should name where session data is stored, and you carry the cross-border homework. If you would rather not carry it, Klarify removes the question entirely: all Klarify data is stored in Canada, and the product is fully HIPAA, PHIPA, PIPEDA, Quebec Loi 25, and GDPR compliant. Mentalyc’s site does state that audio is deleted immediately after processing and that data is not used to train AI models.

Does Mentalyc Work in French?

Not as far as Mentalyc’s main pages say. Neither the homepage nor the pricing page mentions French, or any language other than English, as of 18 August 2026. Multilingual capture may exist deeper in the product, but Mentalyc doesn’t market it where buyers look, and you can’t plan a francophone caseload around a feature the vendor won’t commit to on its pricing page.

For an English-only US caseload, none of this matters. The gap matters most in Canada. A practice in Gatineau, Moncton, or Montréal with even a partial francophone caseload needs session capture and notes that work in French. An English tool with French-speaking clients won’t cut it.
