A Transformative Journey Towards Healing and Self Discovery: Online Somatic Psychotherapy Serving Individuals Across Ontario

About

We guide clients to build their capacity to set boundaries that allow them to know inner freedom. Together, we discover and hold space for repressed feelings that have manifested in pain, addictions, and reoccurring behaviour patterns.

Our somatic approach supports your healing journey using Compassionate Inquiry and therapeutic tools like EMDR, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, mindfulness practices and inner child work. As a mirror, we reflect on what needs attention so that you can thrive in living with joy and love.

Many health plans do cover our services. Clients are encouraged to check with their employer and insurance provider about the extent of their annual coverage for Registered Social Worker and Registered Psychotherapist services.

No. The approach is a body, mind, approach and spiritual elements can be addressed if they arise for you.
What is somatic psychotherapy?
Somatic psychotherapy is a body-centered approach to therapy that recognizes the mind and body as deeply interconnected. Rather than focusing solely on thoughts and cognitive patterns, it pays attention to physical sensations, posture, movement, and breath as entry points for healing. The core idea is that trauma, stress, and emotional experiences are stored in the body, not just the mind, and that lasting change often requires working through the body, not around it. Common techniques include body scanning, breathwork, grounding exercises, noticing physical sensations during emotional processing, and movement. It draws from theories like Peter Levine's Somatic Experiencing, Pat Ogden's Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and Bessel van der Kolk's trauma work. It's particularly effective for trauma, anxiety, chronic stress, and dissociation, essentially anything where talk therapy alone hasn't been enough.
How is somatic psychotherapy different from traditional talk therapy?
Traditional talk therapy focuses primarily on thoughts, beliefs, and verbal processing. Somatic psychotherapy includes all of that while also tracking what is happening in the body during a session. This means a therapist might invite you to notice where you feel tension, tightness, or sensation as you explore something difficult, using those physical cues as part of the healing process rather than ignoring them. We do use talk therapy as well as a way to get to the deeper work.
Is somatic psychotherapy effective for trauma?
Yes, it is one of the most well-researched approaches for trauma recovery. Because traumatic experiences are often held in the nervous system and body, somatic approaches help regulate the nervous system in ways that talking alone cannot always reach. It is commonly used for PTSD, complex trauma, childhood trauma, and for people who feel stuck even after years of traditional therapy.
What types of therapy use a somatic approach?
Several well-known therapeutic modalities are rooted in or incorporate somatic principles. These include Somatic Experiencing, developed by Peter Levine, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, EMDR, Internal Family Systems, and Emotionally Focused Therapy. The work of Dr. Gabor Maté has also been deeply influential in this space, particularly his research on how unresolved trauma and chronic stress live in the body and contribute to illness, addiction, and emotional suffering. At Soulful Therapy, our therapists draw from many of these approaches to meet each client where they are and support healing that goes beyond the surface.
